Welcomer

NEW TIME: 7:30PM Sat 24 Feb

Post-Pop
(Pōneke / Wellington)

Welcomer are a five-piece indie rock group from Pōneke with a penchant for wry pop songs that emphasise sharp lyrics and warm melody. Fronted by songwriter Miles Sutton, the band riff on humour and heartache in equal measure.

Onstage the band experiments with conventional rock layouts, placing digital textures against acoustic guitars and found sounds against vocal harmonies. The result is a warm, folk-indebted indie rock that sits somewhere between Wilco and label-mates Carb on Carb. Their self-titled debut is available now on Papaiti Records. 'Welcomer' received a nomination for favourite EP at the 2023 Student Radio Network Awards, while singles ‘The Summit’, ‘Cicadas 3,’ and ‘A Steely Dan Covers Band’ all charted in the SRN Top 10.

Welcomer have a reputation for compelling live shows. Having toured with Performance Arcade alumni Hans Pucket and Lake South, Welcomer are ready to take to the waterfront stage themselves.

“...the production of Welcomer is bathed in warmth which deftly complements its layered arrangements. Reversed guitars, yearning strings, sneaky banjos, and ethereal pads weave together in swirls of harmonious goodness, each packed with presence and perfectly placed.” —Under the Radar
