About the work

 

Harmonic Hegemony is a three-part immersive sonic and visual installation that explores weaponized sound as both a psychological and physical force. Across its compositions, Mind, Body, and Soul, the work evokes visceral responses to modern warfare and colonial oppression, highlighting the suffering of Palestinian communities and other oppressed Indigenous groups.

Part one (Mind) examines the psychological impact of sonic warfare, using dissonance, unsettling soundscapes, and LRAD-inspired audio manipulations to reflect the terror and trauma experienced by communities under oppression. Part two (Body) focuses on the physical effects of sound, drawing directly from LRAD technology to demonstrate how sonic force can inflict harm while critiquing its use against Indigenous peoples. Part three (Soul) reclaims sound as a tool of empowerment, centering Māori practices to address ancestral and ongoing colonial trauma, fostering healing, resilience, and cultural affirmation.

Through immersive sound and visual experiences, Harmonic Hegemony transforms sonic technologies of control into sites of resistance and empathy, sparking reflection, dialogue, and awareness of ongoing injustices faced by marginalized communities worldwide.

About the artist

Zane Binglethorne
(Ngāti Tumutumu, Tainui)

Pōneke, Aotearoa

Zane Binglethorne (Ngāti Tumutumu, Tainui) is a 22-year-old sonic artist, experimental creator, and Hip Hop/Rap musician from Aotearoa, New Zealand. Their practice moves between contemporary music production and Indigenous sound worlds, drawing on their whakapapa and lived experience as a multicultural young adult in the 21st century.

Through performance and installation, they use sound as both a site of resistance and a vessel for healing, amplifying narratives of identity, trauma, and resilience.
