About the work

‘To be visible. from the top of my head to the tips of my feet.’

Grief can be a difficult path to walk, yet it is one that must be taken to continue living despite loss. The durational walking in Washed Up embodies the act of putting one foot in front of the other, moving through the weight of memory and emotion.

The container’s placement near the water allows a direct connection with lost family members, as all waters are connected. They accompany the performer, leaving traces on the cardboard path through droplets of saltwater that fall with each step. Over the course of the performance, the cardboard bears evidence of this durational practice,  footprints accumulate, and the material gradually soaks and deteriorates, recording the passage of time, grief, and persistence.
