Four Strings Four Limbs

Duet | Pōneke, Aotearoa

About the work

At its heart, Four Strings Four Limbs is a meeting of two disciplines rooted in the body: one expressed through motion, the other through resonance. With four strings of the bass and four limbs of the dancer, the title becomes a metaphor for symmetry, tension, and possibility. The work is grounded in the belief that both artists are, in essence, moving bodies navigating space — one through physical gesture, the other through sonic expression.

The performance is fully improvised, structured by mutual listening, sensitivity, and shared attentiveness. It embraces risk, vulnerability, and spontaneity as vital elements of the creative process. Without predetermined choreography or score, the dancer and the bass player respond to each other in the moment, co-composing a dynamic narrative that unfolds differently with each iteration. Their interaction becomes a form of conversation — sometimes harmonious, sometimes discordant — but always alive.

About the artists

Trinity Maydon

Dancer

Trinity Maydon is a contemporary dance artist from Ōtepoti and a graduate of the New Zealand School of Dance. Now working as a freelance performer and maker, she continues to develop her own artistic voice, drawing inspiration from the storytelling potential of the body. Her practice is grounded in exploring embodiment as a site for both personal expression and collective narrative, investigating the lived experience of movement and the relationship between mind and body.

Trinity has collaborated with a wide range of artists and creatives. Recent work includes the immersive rave installations Entry and Omnia (2025) with the Untitled Warehouse Project, and performing in Commentary of Dreaming, choreographed by Jeremy Beck for the 2025 Dunedin Arts Festival. Her artistic trajectory reflects a curiosity for cross-disciplinary collaboration and an ongoing commitment to exploring new physical worlds.

Alex Cooper

Bass

Alex Cooper is a bass player and musician from Pukekohe. Since moving to Pōneke to study Jazz at the New Zealand School of Music, he has immersed himself in experimental and genre-bending projects, weaving together his passion for improvisation with an expansive, open-eared approach to sound.

A natural collaborator, Alex thrives on understanding the artistic language of others, creating performance environments where communication, trust, and shared expression are central. His work is grounded in a deep respect for musical lineage while pushing into new sonic possibilities.

Alex currently performs with Electric Jazz Fusion Trio UNDUBBED. Following their 2024 EP Once Upon a Clyde, the trio has continued to push their sound toward spacious ambient landscapes punctuated by dynamic, high-energy improvisation.
