Violet Hirst

(Pōneke / Wellington)

Violet is a Pōneke and Te Waipounamu split artist and singer-songwriter. Her music is meditative, nostalgic and fatally romantic - hoping to hang in your head.

Her debut EP Kindhearted was released in December last year, along with a short film Lay With Me in Barns - a black and white portrait set in some-version of the Middlemarch singles ball, following a young girl trying to navigate a world where people rarely say what they mean. The video was shared by Flying Nun, who drew comparisons in her work to Aldous Harding. The rest of the EP can be heard on SRN’s around the country.

Hirst has spent the majority of her musical pursuits in Pōneke, with a talented rotating live band, currently including Phoebe Johnson (Revulva), and Hikurangi Schavien-Kaa (French For Rabits, Dawn Diver). 2021 highlights include performing in remote venues such as the Futuna Chapel, Monty’s and the Vogelmorn Bowling Club, as well as opening for the likes of Kane Strang, Mūroki and Jack Berry. Her other endeavours include fronting band Ski Resort, and singing in the Darling’s behind Michael Llewellyn. Hirst also ran a series of free vocal workshops at Mouthfull’s pop-up Commonspace, spreading her mother’s NYC training to Pōneke. We hope to see these return this year.

Hirst is also playing with her trio setup alongside a Tamaki-Makaurau collective of dancers in CLUB on the nights leading up to this solo performance. Combining contemporary dance with music, for a whole new genre of performance art.
