What is The Performance Arcade? The Performance Arcade is New Zealand's leading experimental performance art festival. Each year a unique assembly of shipping containers provides the venue for a selection of performance installations and a programme of events, from live music through to live art, all on Wellington Waterfront. Widely recognized as a unique platform for performance art, The Performance Arcade features artists from around New Zealand and the globe.
Do I need to pay to come to the Arcade? No! The Performance Arcade is a free annual event, but there will be KOHA boxes around the event if you'd like to give us a small donation as thanks.
Where is the Arcade? Same place it always is, on Wellington Waterfront behind Te Papa.
What time does it start? The Arcade is open from 10am - 11pm, March 10th -19th.
I want to come to the Arcade but I can't make it to Wellington! Not to worry, our Arcade Live page is your gateway to a digital Arcade experience! Listen to the Live Music Series via our playlists, view our Instagram feed, watch our Youtube videos and read our Live Press, updated twice daily. Never miss a thing!
What happens if it rains? This is Wellington, so we are prepared to stay open if there is light rain but we do shut down when the weather sets in. If we do close, we will make an update on our Facebook page. Same goes for wind!
What if I'm hungry? This year we've got Wellington favorite Food For The People joining us to serve up some tasty burgers. Feeling fancy? The Bolton Hotel will be on site March 18-19 serving oysters and froses. And for those looking for something sweet, the Gelissimo cart will be on site selling gelato! All delicious and all affordably priced. Vegetarian options available.
What if I'm thirsty? We will have a drinking fountain onsite for you to refill your water bottle and stay hydrated! Each year The Performance Arcade has it's own pop-up bar, stocked with refreshing drinks from Leftfield wines, Tuatara beer, Three Wise Birds cider, and Six Barrel Soda.
Can I bring alcohol to the Arcade? No, The Performance Arcade is not a BYO venue.
I want to be an Arcade artist! That's amazing! Each April we put out a call for applications which are due by the end of July. Make sure to follow our Facebook page to stay up to date.
What is Live Art? Live Art has been described in many ways. To us it is a broad collection of art forms that address the presence of the audience and the particular moment in time that the audience shares with the work . It includes theatre, performance art, installation, dance, media art, and many other disciplines. Its objectives are not necessarily to entertain and placate audiences, or to provide ornament and decoration - although these things may be part of a live art work. We hope that the live art we present in The Performance Arcade helps to change the way we see the world, and create experiences that linger in your memory for whatever reason - like a dream that you can’t quite decipher; however beautiful, or funny, or haunting it may be. Live art remains alive long after the experience. For further definition please visit our manifesto, or this fantastic description by Live Art Development Agency.
I don't think I like Live Art? Well in that case we suggest you pick up an Audience Handbook (by Canadian artist Cara Spooner), available at our bookstall. This pocket sized book will guide you through your Arcade experience and help you work through the tougher parts of Live Art.
Is The Performance Arcade a music festival? Yes. But it is not just a music festival. It is an intersection of live music, with performance art, with good food and a bar!!!
Is the Arcade kid friendly? Heck yes! We highly encourage you to bring your little ones along to Arcade. Our event is filled with opportunities for fun interactions.
What about my fur child? They are welcome too. In fact, we love dogs at the Arcade! #dogsoftheperformancearcade
Does The Performance Arcade happen anywhere else? Short answer, no. The Performance Arcade is currently a Wellington base live art festival but it is a big dream of ours to bring the Arcade to cities around the world! We do have plans in the works but nothing to announce yet.
But I have so many questions! Great! We'd love to hear them. You can leave a question below or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
