Carbon Copy
Waterfront Series

Carbon Copy is a site-specific performance art piece that reflects individuals of the public. Several hooded figures exist within the waterfront bridge, are they hiding in plain sight or are you simply ignoring them? This artwork explores who holds the power between performer and audience and how it can shift. These figures mimic the public using a canon gesture to reveal who they are, and where they are going, based on the driving force that moves them. This performance art acts as a mirror, at times it is confrontational and others it finds joy in unapologetic foolishness. Carbon Copy is inspired by Pina Bausch a German choreographer and her philosophy of creating movement based on the relationship of people. She often demonstrates power dynamics in her work, and I was interested in exploring this based on who holds the power between performer and audience and how it can shift. Her text ‘Not How People Move But What Moves Them’ describes the concept behind Carbon Copy. How can copying strangers reveal the intention behind why they move?
